Meet the Maker: Frank’s Goods
A conversation with the founder behind a quietly robust, dog-first accessories brand.
1. Background & Beginnings
Frank had just arrived, and I had bought what I thought was a waterproof, robust Biothane collar to see us through trips to the park, countryside and beach. When it fell apart in my hands, I realised that with my background in fashion and accessory design, I could make something much better quality for him.
Even as a fashion student, I was already working with leather and hardware, making belts and accessories, so I had the tools and know how already. I’ve always been obsessed with dogs since childhood, so creating for them felt like a natural extension of that work and honestly, a dream come true.
The first design was obvious. The collar had to be able to withstand water, sea water and a very strong pulling pup. It had to be durable, but it also had to look good.
2. Design Meets Dogs
Designing for dogs means safety is key. I only use screws to construct my dog products, and these are thread-lock glued into place for extra security. Comfort is also very important, and anything new is tested on a variety of different dogs before launching.
Everything has to be waterproof. Dogs need to go outside regardless of the weather, and accessories need to withstand repeated exposure to water.
One thing I refused to compromise on was hardware. I will not use anything other than solid natural brass. With a background in jewellery product development and buying, I knew it was waterproof, rust-proof and widely recycled. It’s a beautiful metal and it performs.

3. The Creative Process
Having my own dog influences every design decision. I want my dog to look good, but be safe and comfortable, and I also want to be comfortable holding the lead.
I only use genuine Biothane rather than cheaper coated webbing. It’s very soft and supple, even softer than leather, while still being hard-wearing and practical.
Dogs love to run through mud and puddles and play with other dogs, so the accessories they wear need to be durable, waterproof and wipeable.
The most rewarding part of running Frank’s Goods has been customer feedback. The brand has been built entirely on recommendations, and it means a lot that people love the products enough to share them.
4. Looking Ahead
Success for Frank’s Goods means continuing to grow while doing things the same way we always have. So far, I’ve done this without advertising, and it’s working.
I would love to expand our retail partners, but it has to be the right fit. I’m not interested in large chain stores. We were approached by Pets Corner about a year ago, but I had to walk away. I won’t compromise on the quality of materials, and I still feel that was the right decision for the brand.

5. What’s One Thing Your Dog Has Taught You?
To take time to get outside.
Before starting this brand, I worked freelance from home and would sit at my desk for hours. Now I’m out walking with Frank twice a day, come rain or shine, without fail. It really is the tonic. I can think better when walking, and I’m definitely more productive because of it.
